Description
Hungry for applause, the street performer juggles his torches as the crowd looks on. He raises one high over head. The crowd goes silent as he brings it down, into his mouth, and then holds it back over his head in triumph. The crowd cheers, feeding his addiction for another day.
Every Thursday night since 1983 San Luis Obispo has closed the main drag, Higuera Street, to automobiles, arranged for special activities and entertainment, and invited farmers to sell their produce. Since then it has turned into one of the most successful farmer's markets in the country. Although called a "Farmers' Market," the farmers make up only a portion of the event. Barbecue pits line the road, merchants set up canopies to peddle their wares, organizations fill information booths with pamphlets, and bands, dancers, and performers such as our friend here keep the residents of San Luis Obispo and beyond returning year after year.
