Description
It may seem unusual to allow fishing in a place where all other wildlife if federally protected. Fishing has been a tradition in Yellowstone since it was first discovered, and in 1899 the government began stocking the rivers with both native and non-native species. This continued until 1955 when all stocking programs were discontinued.
Today, anglers are helping conserve native species. It is illegal to release any non-native fish in most areas of the park because they compete with the natives. Barbless hooks are required, bait is forbidden, and any native fish caught must be returned to the water.
