Description
Tule Elk are a subspecies of elk that are found only in California. The Tule Elk at the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge are the descendants of 18 animals brought there in 1974 in an effort to save a species that went from an estimated 500,000 individuals in the mid-1800s down to as few as 20 by 1900. They live in a large enclosure and elk from the San Luis herd are periodically relocated to establish new or join existing herds in the wild throughout California.
