Artist's Description
Washington Column rises about 1,800 feet from the valley floor. Half Dome rises over 4,700 feet from the valley floor.
While commonly believed that Yosemite's iconic Half Dome is what remains of what once might have been called "Whole Dome" until a glacier took half of it away, this is not at all the case. In fact, during the glacial period when Yosemite Valley was filled to its rim, Half Dome still rose 900 feet above the ice. Both sides of the dome are almost equally steep, the "dome" effect is an illusion created by the rounded top from the usual viewing angles.
About Darin Volpe
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
