Description
It was 1955. Ike was President and not-yet-discraced Richard Nixon was vice-president. The world's first commercial nuclear power plant opened in Arco, Idaho, and development began on a new type of weapon, the nuclear tipped ICBM. Ray Kroc opened the first McDonalds, Disneyland's gates opened for the first time, and "Rock Around the Clock" became the first Rock & Roll single to hit number one on the pop charts. Jim Henson created puppet named Kermit. And for $2,065 you could drive home in a brand-new Chevy Bel Air.
The 1955 Bel Air was a big change from the previous model year. It's body was completely redesigned and it was the first Chevy available since 1918 available with a V8 engine. People opting for the Bel Air over the lower models were treated to other bonuses such as as chrome headliner bands and other trim, full wheel covers, and interior carpeting. The car was praised for its handling, accelleration (0-60 in 12.9 seconds,) and a comfortable ride. Although the '57 Bel Air the most sought after model, I personally prefer the styling of the earlier '55 model.
