Description
Although a common species, the diminutive size of the Gorgon Copper butterfly makes it hard to spot as it crawls from flower to flower in search of food.
The Gorgon Copper (Lycaena gorgon) is a small butterfly with a wingspan of less than one and a half inches. The top of the wings is coppery brown, but at rest it holds its wings closed and only reveals a thin strip of copper along the leading edge. Their range is from southern Oregon, through California, and into Baja California, Mexico.
