Description
The Trans-Alaska Pipeline delivers crude oil from Prudhoe Bay to the port in Valdez, Alaska, passing through 800 miles of the Alaska landscape. Here, the Alaskan Pipeline passes in front of a mountain range alongside the Richardson Highway. The pipeline is a marvel of technology, incorporating many design features that are uniquely required for the Alaskan environment. Permafrost made below-ground construction impossible for much of the pipeline because the heat of the oil would melt the icy soil around it and potentially cause leaks, so about half of the pipeline was built above ground. Most of the above-ground sections are supported by posts to keep heat away from the soil. Another major concern was the threat of earthquakes, which are common in Alaska. The pipeline had to be built on sliding supports which would allow the pipeline to shift up to 20 feet horizontally and five feet vertically.
