Description
Enjoying the desert, the sunset, and a bottle of wine at Death Valley National Park
Zabriskie Point is located off of highway 190, near the southeast entrance of Death Valley National Park. The point and the surrounding badlands are part of the Amargosa Range, a region created by sediments from the bottom of an ancient lake that existed about nine million years ago. As the mountains rose and Death Valley sunk, the soft sedimentary rock was exposed to weather and was eroded away by water runoff.
Death Valley National Park is the hottest, driest, and lowest place in North America. In 1913 the temperature in Death Valley reached 134°F (56.7°C), holding the record of the highest ambient air temperature ever recorded on Earth. Summer temperatures of 120°F are common. It was formed in 1933 as a national monument and was expanded became a national park in 1994.
