Description
She stood on the pier looking demurely over her shoulder, her brown eyes catching the afternoon sun as well as the eyes of the nearby boys who nod to get her attention. When she spots one who's particularly attractive she'll head over to his place and check it out. If she likes what she sees she may invite him for a dance, then perhaps share a meal. If all goes well, they'll soon be building a home together.
This female brown pelican was at Port San Luis, in Avila Beach, California. Had she actually been looking for a mate, it would very likely have been in Channel Islands National Park off the coast of California, the only place where they breed in the western United States. The male selects a nest site and waves his head to attract a female. They engage in various calls, dance rituals, and even share food before deciding to mate for life. They build the nest together, either at the male's nest site or one of the female's choosing where she will lay up to three eggs.
