Description
Overlooking Atascadero Lake in central California a female bald eagle perches high on an oak tree, in territory reclaimed after an eighty-year absence.
Once plentiful, Bald Eagles disappeared from central California by the 1930s primarily due to the pesticide DDT along with human development, agriculture, timber harvesting, and other pesticides and contaminants. Bald eagles were listed as an endangered species in 1971. Fewer than 30 nesting pairs remained in California and all of those in the north. Things turned around in 1972 when DDT was banned and in 2007 they were removed from the endangered species list.
