Description
Coyotes are extremely adaptable animals. They are found throughout North and Central America and thrive in both urban areas as well as remote wilderness such as is found in Yellowstone National Park. It is believed that this adaptability helped them resist efforts to exterminate them in the early 1900s.
When wolves were eradicated from Yellowstone in the early part of the 20th century one of the coyote's primary predators was gone (leaving only cougars as their main threat,) and their population increased. When wolves were reintroduced to the park in 1995 and that predator returned, their numbers began to fall. This has caused a chain-reaction due to wolves not hunting the smaller animals that coyotes fed on, leaving more food for the smaller foxes and boosting their populations.
