Description
The Kings River originates in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Kings Canyon National Park and the John Muir Wilderness. The South Fork of the river flows down Kings Canyon beside the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway that connects the east and west sections of the park.
Giant Sequoia National Monument encompasses 328,000 acres in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. The monument is in two sections. The northern section where this photo was made surrounds General Grant Grove and other parts of Kings Canyon National Park. The southern section is directly south of Sequoia National Park. The National Monument was created on April 15, 2000 by president Bill Clinton. In the United States, a National Monument is a protected area similar to a National Park but can be created on any federal land by the President of the United States through the Antiquities Act of 1096, where a National Park requires an at of Congress. Also unlike National Parks which are administered by the National Park Service, National Monuments may be managed by the United States Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Land Management as well as the National Park Service.
