Description
This 747-400 was named "Lady Bird" when Virgin Atlantic took delivery in 1997. On this April afternoon in 2013 it was making a landing approach to Oistens, Barbados.
The Boeing 747-400 was introduced in 1988 as an upgrade to the 747 line that has been in production since 1969. The 747 was the world's first wide-body jetliner and cemented Boeing's dominance as the dominant passenger aircraft manufacturer. The -400 is the most common passenger version in use today. It has a cruising speed of up to 570 mph, a range of 8,350 miles, and can carry between 416 and 660 passengers depending upon the seating layout.
Virgin Atlantic started operations with a single Boeing 747-200 flying between London's Gatwick airport and Newark, New Jersey in the United States. Since then it has expanded service to include other North American destinations, Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Asia. In addition to Boeing 747s, the airline flies Airbus A330s, Airbus A340s, and has orders for A350s and A380s.
