Lesser Sandhill Cranes are a smaller subspecies of Sandhill Crane. They are migratory birds, these traveling from breeding grounds in Alaska to spend their winter in central California. As many as 20,000 Lesser Sandhill Cranes spend the winter in the Merced National Wildlife Refuge, the largest concentration in the Pacific Flyway.
This photo was taken at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge in central California. This 10,258 facility was established in 1951 and consists of wetlands, grasslands, vernal pools, and croplands.
