Description
A bolt of lightning strikes during a thunderstorm in Whites City, near Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico.
Summer rains in New Mexico fall almost entirely during frequent, if brief, thunderstorms. These lightning storms can cause several inches of rain to fall on small areas in a short time, and the runoff from these storms frequently cause flash floods. July and August are the rainiest months, with 30% to 40% of the year's total moisture falling at that time.
Whites City, New Mexico is a small unincorporated community in southeastern New Mexico. It primarily caters to visitors to Carlsbad Caverns National Park and consists of a single motel, a campground, a gift shop, and a restaurant.
