Description
It's not easy being a sea otter mom. Dad is long gone, only hanging around for a few days after mating before leaving to try his luck with another female. From then on she's on her own, and about six months later she gives birth to her four-pound bundle of fur. For the first two months she carries the pup on her chest, constantly grooming its fur and keeping it out of the cold water. Baby's dense fur traps enough air that the pup cannot sink or dive for two months. When diving for food mom leaves her pup floating on the surface and will often wrap it in kelp to keep it from drifting off. Mom's stay with their pups for about eight months while they teach them to swim and hunt, then it is time for mother and child to head their separate ways.
