Description
Big Bear, in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, boasts over 300 days of sunshine per year. The Big Bear Solar Observatory sits on the eastern shore of Big Bear Lake and that large body of cold water reduces atmospheric turbulence and heat radiation. An elevation of over 6,700 feet makes that much less atmosphere to image through. All this makes it an ideal location for the observatory, the largest solar telescope in the world.
