Description
It takes a keen eye to spot an American Bittern. This one is in its concealment pose - motionless, neck stretched up, beak pointing skyward - to masquerade as as the reedy background.
A member of the heron family, American Bitterns are somewhat stockier and with shorter legs than typical herons. They live throughout much of North America, where they breed in Canada and in most of the northern three-quarters of the United States. They winter on the Pacific and Gulf Coasts of the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean islands. It is aquatic, living mostly in bogs, marshes, and thickly vegetated ponds and marshes.
Oso Flaco Lake Natural Area is part of Oceano Dunes State Recreational Area. The lake gained its name when the Portola expedition came through the area in 1769 and made a meal of "un oso flaco" - a skinny bear. This part of the State Park is located away from the better known off-roading area of the sand dunes, with entry being over ten miles away near the small town of Guadalupe.
