Description
Four of the many telescope domes at the Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton.
The large dome houses the 120-inch C. Donald Shane telescope, the most powerful telescope at the observatory. It was put into service in 1959 and was the second largest telescope in the world at the time.
Beside and slightly in front of the Shane dome is the Automated Planet Finder, a fully robotic telescope designed to search for extrasolar planets.
The small dome in hidden behind the trees in the foreground houses the Tauchmann telescope. This one was built by amateur astronomer George Tauchmann in the 1930s and purchased by the Lick Observatory in 1950.
Finally, in the far background is the Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope. KAIT is an automated telescope that is used to search the skies for supernovae.
