Description
The Chrysler Building as seen from the observation deck of the Empire State Building.
A classic example of Art Deco architecture, the Chrysler Building is considered by many to be one of the finest buildings in New York City. In 2007 it ranked ninth on the American Institue of Architects' "List of America's Favorite Architecture." Ironically, when built it was criticized for being too ambitious and ostentatious.
When completed in 1930, it was the tallest man-made stucture and the first to surpass 1,000 feet in height. It held the title of world's tallest building for just under one year, until surpassed by the Empire State Building. Still, it's stainless steel crown and automotive-inspired gargoyles make this one of the classics of the Manhattan skyline.
