Description
The Arctic Tern is a seabird well known for having the longest migration of any bird, one that takes it up to 25,000 miles (40,000 km) from its Arctic breeding grounds to its wintering grounds off of Antarctica. Not only does it have a remarkably long migration, it is also a long-lived bird with the oldest on record being over 34 years old. It hunts primarily by plunging into the water after hovering briefly to catch small fish, although they do occasionally catch flying insects. The Arctic tern is a medium-sized bird, around 13-14 inches from the tip of its beak to the tip of its tail and with a wingspan of 30-33 inches.
