Description
Main Terrace stands at the top of the lower terrace area at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park.
Water heated by magma deep underground works its way up through cracks and gaps in the limestone on its way to the surface. As it travels, the acidic water dissolves the limestone and carries it to the surface. Once there, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide is released, and white calcium carbonate gets deposited and forms the terraces. Color comes from cyanobacteria, whose color varies depending upon the water temperature.
