Description
Looking like rusty iron, bacterial mats spread out from the hot springs at Yellowstone National Park. Water emerges at about 195 degrees Fahrenheit from the nearby blue Doublet Pool and cools as it flows across the landscape. The orange cyanobacteria here prefers temperatures in the 95-135 degree range.
It all started three billion years ago, when cyanobacteria first started to photosynthesize light energy and produce oxygen. Over time the CO2 levels dropped, O2 levels rose, and the atmosphere transformed into the air we breathe today.
