Description
An American Flamingo preens itself at the Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero, California.
The word Flamingo comes from the Portuguese or Spanish word "flamengo," meaning "with the color of flame." Young flamingos hatch with grayish reddish plumage. Adult flamingos range from light pink to bright red, picking up their distinct color from their food supply.
The American Flamingo, or Caribbean Flamingo, (phoenicopterus ruber) is the only flamingo which naturally inhabits North America and is closely related to the Greater Flamingo and Chilean Flamingo.
Charles Paddock Zoo is a small zoo in the city of Atascadero, California. It was started by Charles Paddock, a county park ranger, in 1955. It moved to its current location in 1963.
