Description
Resembling a giant woodpile left behind by ancient giants, broken basalt columns litter the foreground at Devils Postpile National Monument in California. Formed 100,000 years ago, the geometric columns were created when a 400 ft. deep lake of lava slowly cooled. As the lava solidified it began to contract and crack, leaving the vertical columns. Later, glaciers smoothed the tops of the columns and exposed the face that is seen today.
