Description
Man's best friend relaxes by the door at the top of the stairs on a lazy St. Lucia afternoon.
Saint Lucia is an island on the boundary between the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. In about 800 AD the warlike Caribs took the island from the peaceful Arawaks who had lived there for the past 400-600 years. The first Europeans arrived in the early 17th century - first the Dutch, then the English - but were decimated by the Carib inhabitants. It wasn't until 1635 that the French established a permanent settlement. The island was fought over by the French and British through much of the 18th century, with control shifting a dozen times. In 1803 the British finally seized control of St. Lucia, and the island remained British territory until it achieved independence in 1979.
