Description
The main entrance of the Sears Tower (now known as the Willis Tower) at 233 South Wacker Drive in Chicago, Illinois as seen in 2006.
The Sears Tower was completed in 1973 and was the tallest building in the world at the time at 108 stories and 1,450 feet tall at the top of the roof. The top of the tower is also the highest point in Illinois. It was originally planned to be only 70 stories, but because of Sears' projected growth the height grew to the maximum allowed by the Federal Aviation Administration to protect air traffic. Unfortunately, sears optimistic growth projections were not met, and Sears began moving its offices out of the Sears Tower in 1992. Despite not being the largest tenant, the Willis Group obtained the right to rename the building as part of their lease in 2009.
