Description
Frame number 7148-21 came off the EMD assembly line in February of 1969 as an SD45 covered in the yellow and green paint of the Chicago and Northwestern railroad. It stayed in those colors for 25 years until it was remanufactured, sold to Southern Pacific as a new SD40M-2, and repainted gray and red. A few years later the Union Pacific bought Southern Pacific and it got a yellow patch with a red UP number covering the old SP number. It never got the full yellow Union Pacific paint treatment though, and lived with the yellow patch under the cab windows as the old SP paint faded and flaked away. It was eventually bought by a leasing company and as of 2016 it was spotted, still wearing the SP/UP combination, rusting in a storage yard.
This photo was taken in 1996.
