Artist's Description
The elegant Sundial Bridge rises 217 feet above Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding, California.
The bridge is an extraordinary architectural and engineering feat designed by the acclaimed Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. With a modern and visually appealing design, Sundial Bridge features a single-tower cable-stayed support system and a distinctive white, translucent deck that is illuminated at night.
Functioning exclusively as a pedestrian bridge, the Sundial Bridge spans the Sacramento River, connecting the north and south campuses of Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Notably, the bridge incorporates a functional sundial aspect, with the tower serving as the gnomon for a large-scale sundial on the bridge deck.
From an unconventional vantage point beneath the Sundial Bridge, and further enhanced through the eye of a fisheye lens, a brilliant sunstar casts it light onto the tower, throwing its shadow onto the time markers on dial below.

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
