Description
I think jellyfish are among the most otherworldly creatures of our planet. To me, this one looks like an alien ship blasting into an other world's strangely colored sky, leaving a trail of exhaust billowing behind it.
This Pacific Sea Nettle was photographed at the Steinhart Aquarium in the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Originally made with a fisheye lens, the photograph was processed to remove the distortion from the lens. The software attempted color correction but wasn't very successful. The blue background went purple and the blue edge caused by the less-than-perfect optical qualities of the aquarium glass was enhanced. This type of color fringing is usually something photographers fight to avoid to correct in post-production, but I like the way it enhances the edge of the jellyfish and like otherworldly effect the purple gives the photo.
