Everyone was expecting an interesting day when they boarded the H-4 Hercules, disrespectfully known as the Spruce Goose, on the 2nd of November, 1947. Howard Hughes would be taking taking several newsmen, along with engineers and the flight crew, on taxi tests of his enormous flying boat. Hughes arranged for it to be a Hollywood-style event, attended by starlets, VIPs, and the media. The engines roared as the plane completed the first two test runs in Long Beach Harbor. Asked by one of the on-board journalists if the plane would fly that day, Hughes replied with a definitive "Of course not."
