Description
Union Pacific has been in the business of building America since its beginnings in 1862.
The railroad originated with an act of Congress and was one of two railroads that built the transcontinental railroad that connected Nebraska with California in 1869. While the Central Pacific built east out of Sacramento, the UP went west from Omaha. By the time the two railroads joined at Provo, Utah, the Union Pacific had laid over 1,000 miles of track across the United States. The Union Pacific Rail Road was bought out in 1880 by the coincidentally named but unrelated Union Pacific, Eastern Division, Rail Road to become the Union Pacific Railway. This second iteration of the Union Pacific lasted until 1897, when it went bankrupt during a four-year economic depression. A new Union Pacific Railroad was formed and merged with the failed Union Pacific Railway. This company remained until 1996, when it's parent, the Union Pacific Corporation, purchased Southern Pacific and merged it's Union Pacific Railroad into the newly acquired Southern Pacific to form the current Union Pacific Railroad.
Today, the railroad operates over 32,000 miles of track from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Coast, and from the Gulf of Mexico to Puget Sound. This train was westbound on the Mojave subdivision between Tehachapi and Bakersfield, California, and photographed at the crossing of Bealville Road.
