Description
I crouched beside this railroad crossing to get all of my favorite elements in this photo of a Union Pacific train - a wide-angle lens, a low perspective, and as close as possible to my subject.
An average of 35 trains cross this road each day on their way over the Tehachapi Mountains. Even with crossing bells and train whistles, over 2,000 vehicles are struck by trains at road crossings in the United States each year, with over 200 fatalities. The good news is that this number has been steadily decreasing - down from almost 10,000 collisions in 1981.
Warning bells and flashing lights at this railroad crossing signal the approach of this yellow Union Pacific freight train. An EMD SD70ACe leads two other locomotives in pulling the train on its way down the Tehachapi Mountains under a blue California sky.
