Description
Sundial bridge has become a landmark in the northern California town of Redding.
The north and south campuses of Turtle Bay Exploration Park were separated by the Sacramento River. When looking for a designer for a footbridge to join the park, the city made the bold choice to bring in Spanish artist and architect Santiago Calatraya.
Instead of a more rustic design that many believed was more fitting to Redding's logging history, a modern glass and concrete cable-stayed bridge was selected. In addition to the bold styling, the cable-stayed bridge meant that no piers would need to support the bridge from below, leaving the Sacramento River clear for the salmon that spawn beneath.
