Description
Railroad tracks serving the Port of Benicia pass beneath the three bridges that are known collectively as the Benicia-Martinez Bridge.
In 1930, a 5,603-foot railway bridge replaced Southern Pacific ferry service across the Carquinez Strait. Consisting of seven through truss spans, two deck spans, and a lift span that can be raised 135 feet above the water. It was the first of the three bridges connecting Benicia with Martinez in the northern San Francisco Bay Area.
To the west is the original highway bridge, a 1.2-mile deck truss bridge that today serves as southbound I-680. Built in 1962 it, like the railroad bridge, replaced ferry service. When traffic became too much for the bridge to handle, a parallel span was opened in 2007.
