Description
From the Island in the Sky, the uppermost level of Canyonlands National Park looking into the canyons below.
Canyonlands National Park is located in southeastern Utah, near Arches National Park and the town of Moab. It protects the landscape of canyons, mesas, and buttes formed around the confluence of the Colorado River and Green River.
In 1961, the Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation took then Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udal on a flight to show him where he wanted to build the next big dam - on the Colorado River just below where it is joined by the Green River. But where the Reclamation chief saw a reservoir, the Interior Secretary saw a National Park. In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson signed legislation creating Canyonlands National Park.
