Description
When the Space Needle was built back in 1961, nobody cared about the price of gas or greenhouse gas. Car ads didn't mention fuel consumption, and MPGs were counted in the teens.
Meanwhile, a Japanese company called Toyota had recently begun exporting the Toyopet Crown to the United States. Mileage was in the 23 - 34 MPG range, but Americans were not impressed with the slow and small car.
Fast-forward sixty years. Toyota outsold General Motors - the first time GM wasn't on top since the 1930s. The hybrid Highlander matched the 34 mpg rating of the '61 Toyopet, but in a vehicle twice the weight and with three times the acceleration.
Parked under the Space Needle, this 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is part of the vision of the future that the Needle represented in 1961 - a world of technology and science. Only in 1961, nobody would have imagined it would be foreign and that "Made in Japan" would become a desired feature instead of a label to avoid.
