Description
Looking over Grant Park from the Shedd Aquarium towards the city skyline.
Grant Park, covers over three-quarters of a square mile on the edge of Lake Michigan. The city officially designated the land east of Michigan Avenue as a park in 1844. It promised that the park would remain public land with no buildings and, except for the Art Institute being built in 1892, the city kept its promise. Originally called Lake Park, it was renamed in honor of Ulysses S. Grant in 1901.
Chicago is the third largest city in the United States when measured by population, with over 2.7 million people. It was incorporated in 1837 and grew rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century. The Great Chicago Fire destroyed a large section of the city in 1871 and led to the largest building boom in United States history. When rebuilt the old wooden construction was replaced with modern steel and stone buildings. This led to the skyscraper era around the world. The second tallest building in the United states, the Willis Tower (better known by its original name, "Sears Tower") is located in Chicago.
