Description
The history of Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church began with the arrival of twenty-four Greek immigrants to Santa Barbara County at the turn of the 20th century. The Greek population increased over then next half century, and in 1946 several Greek businessmen purchased a vacant elementary school building and transformed the interior into an Orthodox sanctuary for the Greek community. The Greek Orthodox Church was incorporated in 1947. The current church property was purchased in 1976 and construction of the new church began a decade later in 1986. The early nineties saw the installation of stained glass windows and interior artwork including mosaics created from 17 million pieces of glass.
The Greek Orthodox Church (Greek: Ἑλληνορθόδοξη Ἑκκλησία) maintains many traditions practiced in the ancient church, having descended from churches founded by the Apostles in the Balkans and the Middle East during the first century A.D. They are united with the other Eastern Orthodox Churches and, along with other Eastern Orthodox Churches such as the Russian Orthodox Church, see themselves as administrative units of of one single church.
