Description
The Fremont Theater opened on Memorial Day in 1942 with the film "This Above All," all proceeds from that night's ticket sales going to local chapters of the USO. It remains in operation as a theater, concert hall, and event venue. The building was designed by architect S. Charles Lee in the Streamline Moderne style, a late version of Art Deco that emerged during the Great Depression of the 1930s. First conceived by industrial designers, this design style stripped Art Deco of it's ornamental design elements in favor of aerodynamic shapes and rounded edges. The style was the first to incorporate electric light into architectural style.
