Artist's Description
A sulphur crested cockatoo perched on a tree on B81 between Cowra and Yass, New South Wales, Australia.
Sulphur crested cockatoos are probably Australia's best-known parrot. They are native to northern and eastern Australia all the way south to Tasmania. They are so abundant that they are often considered pests, being destructive to fruit and cereal crops as well as wooden structures. Still, they are a protected species under Australian Commonwealth Law.
Cockatoo pairs form a bond that lasts a lifetime, and if they are separated may slip into a deep depression. Their call can be very loud, being adapted to travel through the forest environments in which they live. These birds are extremely intelligent and are very good at learning to mimic human speech.
They live from twenty to forty years in the wild, and up to eighty years or more in captivity.
