Throwing sand over their bodies to keep away the sun, female elephant seals pile together on the beach at the Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery near San Simeon, California.
Northern elephant seals have been coming to the shore at Piedras Blancas since 1990. Located about 40 miles north of the seaside community of Morro Bay and five miles from San Simeon, this stretch of beach has seen the population increase from a few dozen to over 23,000 by 2015. Viewing boardwalks are built high above the sand, giving visitors an incredible view of one of natures grand spectacles.
