Description
Two locomotives making a combined 6,800 horsepower is overkill for this train of eight empty cars on Union Pacific's Coast Line.
Back in the day – meaning the late 1980s and early 1990s – GP60s like the on on the point of this train were coming off the assembly line at EMDs Canadian factory in London, Ontario. The most technologically advanced locomotive at the time, they made 3,600 horsepower and were designed to pull American high-speed intermodal trains across the country. Almost all of the 380 GP60s produced were purchased by the Southern Pacific (100 units plus 95 for their SSW division) and Santa Fe (126 units total – including 63 wide cab and 23 cabless.)
Being relatively new production locomotives, most are still in service in 2022, albeit having traded their prestigious fast freight service for the countless local routes around the country. This former St. Louis Southwestern GP60 leads a sting of empty freight cars that were picked up from industries between Salinas and Paso Robles, California.
