Description
The cable car system in San Francisco, California, is the last manually operated cable car system in the world. It was established in 1873 and by 1890 there were twenty-three cable car lines running in San Francisco. By 1912 electric streetcars had replaced all but the eight lines that ran on grades too steep for streetcars to operate on, and by the 1930s those hills could be climbed by the buses of the era. There were only two lines remaining in by 1944. They were almost shut down in 1947, but a local citizens' committee fought to get a referendum requiring the city to continue operating those lines. It passed with 166,989 votes for and 51,457 against. There are currently three lines operating, the Powell-Mason line, the Powell-Hyde line, and the California Street line.
