Artist's Description
Some life on the sea floor is so brightly colored you can't miss it against the gray sand. Others blend into the sand so well you can't see them until they move. This photo shows both, the orange anemone taking center stage and a speckled halibut nearly invisible in the sand.
This photo is from the Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. It was originally shot with a fisheye lens, then the optical distortion was removed in processing. This caused the stretching of the edges of the photograph, drawing the eye to the undistorted bright anenome in the center. A halibut behind it blends into the sand.
