Artist's Description
While General Electric B40-8s like the one on the point of this train was a fairly common sight on the Southern Pacific Coast Line in the '90s, the two engines directly behind it were such a rarity that I only saw them this one time. The EMD model SW1500 was originally designed to be a used as an switcher moving freight cars around industries or working on branch lines, but it also found a place with larger Class I railroads like the Southern Pacific where they were put into use on the mainline as well. Production lasted from 1966 to 1974, and SP 2612 was built in 1971.
About Darin Volpe
I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. My photography varies from Architecture to Industrial Art to Nature to Wildlife and I'm sure you'll find something suitable for your home or office. Visit my blog
