It takes a lot of energy to beat your wings 80 times per second and your heart 1200 times per minute. This female Anna's Hummingbird hovers over a feeder, where she will drink up to half her weight in nectar each day.

Before the 1930's, Anna's Hummingbirds were found only in California and Baja California. Since then, the widespread use of backyard feeders and the introduction of trees such as the eucalyptus has increased their range all the way up to Vancouver, Canada.

I have been photographing the things I see for over thirty years. A resident of San Luis Obispo County, I'm lucky to have many excellent photo destinations within a few minutes' or hours' drive. Beyond the local area, I have traveled throughout California and the western United States, visited far away American destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Alaska, and international destinations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
