Description
Heat rises off the top of this EMD SD75M as it slowly approaches the Broad Street Crossing on the Seattle waterfront.
Electro-Motive was General Motor's locomotive manufacturing division from 1941 until 2005. Between the 1950s and 1980s it was the undisputed king of the road, outlasting all competitors except General Electric. Eventually all kings must fall, and in 1987 GE finally overtook Electro-Motive Division in sales. EMD was still a strong player, providing Union Pacific with the largest locomotive order in history, but General Motors eventually sold EMD in 2005. Today the EMD name continues as Electro-Motive Diesel, owned by Caterpillar subsidiary Progress Rail.
BNSF 253 was originally ordered by the Santa Fe Railroad and delivered in 1995 as #8253 in red and silver Warbonnet paint to the newly formed Burlington Northern Santa Fe. By 2002 it had been repainted in the orange "H2" scheme, and received it's new number by mid 2014. By the end of 2018 it was painted in the newest "Swoosh" scheme as seen in this photo from August of 2021.
