Artist's Description
Twin Pratt & Whitney turboprob engines roar as this Sécurité Civile Bombardier 415 water bomber fills its tank in the Bay of Villefranche on the French Riviera.
The Bombardier 415 (previously known as the Canadair CL-415) is a water bomber built by Bombardier Aerospace in Canada. The aircraft was designed specifically for aerial firefighting and can scoop up over 6,000 liters (1,600 US gallons) of as skims the surface of a lake or other body of water. It is a type of amphibious aircraft known as a "flying boat," meaning that instead of a traditional fuselage it has a hull that allows it to land on water. Flying boats are distinguished from floatplanes which are traditional aircraft with pontoons mounted below the fuselage.
Sécurité Civile is the civil defence agency of the French government. It operates 23 water bombers including twelve Bombardier 415s such as the one photographed here.
