Artist's Description
An ancient horse in this layer, something that looks like a rhino (but isn't) in that one, paleontologists are still studying the fossils unearthed at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
There was a time when this desert resembled modern Costa Rica, The dinosaurs had all died out 15 million years before, and exotic mammals such as the mastodon roamed among the tropical forests. Every few million years or so volcanic eruptions would throw down another layer of earth, creating the colorful striations you see today and leaving behind one of the best fossil records of early mammals on the planet.
The Painted Hills are a spectacular geologic formation in John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. A stunning landscape of colorful striations in the eroded earth in central Oregon, the Painted Hills let us peek through millions of years of history.
